As you might have guessed from his last name, Lulo Reinhardt comes from the extended family of musicians that includes the legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt.
Unlike most of his kin, who have focused on swing and other jazz idioms, Lulo’s music has a strong Latin feel, with a dash of flamenco.
Rather than play a guitar with steel strings, he has opted for a guitar with nylon strings.
The Daimen, which he designed with the luthiers at Kremona, is a hybrid model (narrower neck, radiused fretboard, 14 fret neck) nylon string guitar that is perfectly suited to his eclectic style.
Quality hard shell case included.
Unlike most nylon string guitars, the Daimen (signed by Lulo himself) has a 14-fret neck that, when combined with the cutaway, allows easy access to the highest frets.
The nut measures 48mm (about 1 /3/4”) and the fretboard has a radius, two features that help make this guitar feel familiar to a steel string guitarist.
In a nod to the Maccaferri-style guitars that Django and other Gypsy jazz musicians played over the years, the Daimen has a large, oblong soundhole that recalls the D-shape sound hole of those classic guitars.
The top is constructed from solid European spruce, with layered Bulgarian walnut on the back and sides and a solid walnut neck.
The Daimen is fitted with an LR Baggs Element pickup which includes volume and tone controls just inside the sound hole.
This crossover guitar will appeal to classical guitarists looking for a nylon string instrument that is well suited to jazz and other contemporary styles as well as steel string players looking to experiment with the rounder, more romantic sound of a classical guitar.
