Legal Assistant II – Victim/Witness Unit
Starting Salary Range: $43,896.
36 - $48,302.
48 annually Position Summary This opening is for a Legal Assistant II in the Victim/Witness Unit of the State’s Attorney’s Office.
This specific position assists crime victims in exercising their constitutional rights under the Illinois Constitution and statutory rights under the Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act.
It also assists Assistant State’s Attorneys in scheduling lay and professional witnesses for trials and hearings.
It is imperative that the individual selected for this position possess strong organizational skills that can assist attorneys in coordinating the schedules for an untold number of victims, witnesses and professionals that are necessary to testify in complex criminal matters.
Moreover, it is further imperative that the individual selected for this position be able to show victims of crime a proper amount of empathy as they seek to cope with trauma.
This is a grant funded position and, as such, the existence of the position is subject to state funding appropriations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists staff attorneys in trial preparation for cases by retrieving documents, tracking availability and location of witnesses, preparing subpoenas and arranging for service, and organizing evidence; proof reads and checks memos, pleadings and briefs; tracks and monitors progress of cases; gathers case filings statistics and prepares monthly reports.
Opens and reviews incoming correspondence, associating correspondence with appropriate case files; attaches related materials when appropriate; composes routine correspondence, as needed.
Establishes and maintains files, records data base information, and other information sources related to work; keeps suspense file on recurring and other scheduled requirements for replies and reports; maintains trial and appeal log, office docket system, and office calendar.
Operates various standard office equipment, such as word processor, copiers, and calculators.
Collects case statistics for preparing quarterly and yearly grant reporting Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of English composition, spelling, and grammar, including legal terminology.
Considerable knowledge of legal record keeping, documents, and reporting systems.
Knowledge of criminal court procedures.
Skill in operating word processing and other standard office equipment.
Ability to understand and apply general guidelines to various legal requirements, and to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work with and maintain confidential information in an atmosphere of loyalty and trust.
Ability to organize work and perform assignments under minimal direction.
Ability to express ideas clearly and convey information effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to produce quality work under tight deadlines.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, county officials, staff of outside agencies, and the public.
Required Qualifications Considerable experience (4-6 years) as a legal secretary or clerk in a law office involving the broad scope of legal support functions Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications Certification as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal is preferred.
Physical Attributes/Demands Work requires sitting for long periods of time, standing, walking, bending stooping, climbing stairs, lifting, moving and carrying light objects, and operating standard office equipment.
Work Environment The work is performed indoors, in an office environment and involves exposure to normal risks typical to an office setting.
